The rocking horse became one of the most treasured toys of the Victorian nursery — beautifully made objects, often crafted from wood, with sweeping rockers and a gentle movement that became inseparable from childhood.
They were toys, certainly, but they were also objects made to last. Loved, kept and sometimes handed from one generation to the next.
The Rocking Alpaca takes that familiar idea and gives it an unexpected twist.
Handcrafted in sterling silver, my little alpaca stands upon curved rockers and gently rocks backwards and forwards. The traditional horse has been replaced by an alpaca — an animal that has been part of my own life for more than twenty years.
His legs are held firmly in place by tiny handmade silver nails, a small detail that echoes the construction of traditional handmade toys. Every part is individually hand-cut from my own design, then constructed, finished and polished in my Devon workshop.
There is a touch of humour, but he isn't intended as a novelty. I wanted to capture something of those beautifully made toys of the past: an object with character, movement and a story.
A tiny contemporary heirloom.

Rocking Alpaca: approximately 24mm × 20mm, measured from the widest points of the rockers to the top of the alpaca's head.
